Dr. Paul Larry
The next day, I was introduced to one of the researchers Rick Doblin had been telling me about. It turned out to be Dr. Larry (an anonymous pseudonym). Dr. Larry has been a respected member of the psychiatric profession for more than 30 years and specializes in treating anxiety.
The conversation I had with him was immediately comfortable. I had heard from Rick, and his colleague Natalie, that Dr. Larry was a great man and a pleasure to interact with, and he certainly lived up to that reputation.
He welcomed me and my desire to take part in the research he was planning. He said it was going to be an uphill battle and that we’d need all the help we could get. To start with, we were going to need money to fund the research.
He said that Rick Doblin, through MAPS, had already pledged to fund a portion of the total cost, but there was still a lot of money left to raise.
I recognized this as my first opportunity to contribute to the research. Just last night, as I was leaving the conference, I met Anna; the Science Director at the Beckley Foundation - a charity that funds scientific research into psychedelic drugs. We had become friendly during our 40 minutes on the tube together and I had a strong intuition that she would be able to help us. After all, part of her job as Science Director, is to find research projects that are eligible to receive funding!
I continued conversing with Dr. Larry and, later that day, introduced him to Anna, who said that if we went through the proper procedures, there would be a good chance of receiving funds from the Beckley Foundation.
Dr Larry and I agreed to continue working together and he suggested that I could, in future, use the research protocol as my PhD study, should I choose to do so.
The outcome had been ideal. I had come to the conference hoping to open doors to post-graduate research that truly interests me, and I achieved exactly that.
And there was still more to come...
